Showcase: Bek

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the Lois & Clark: The New Adventure of Superman Writer’s Showcase, pioneered by Annie Lansbury back in 1998! In the last few years, FoLCdom has seen a resurgence—old FoLCs coming back, new FoLCs joining, long-time lurkers de-lurking. It’s heartening to know just how awesome and long lasting FoLCdom is!

Earlier this year, Carrie Rene started a monthly newsletter (which gets posted on the L&C Fanfic Message Boards and in the Discord server—yes! We have a #loisclark Discord server!), and with that, she’s brought back the writer’s showcase!

Now, in keeping with Annie’s famous words, without further ado we are proud and honored to present this week’s Writer in the Writer’s Showcase …

Lois & Clark or Superman Status

How long have you watched Lois & Clark?

I’ve been watching Lois & Clark since it first aired in 1993!

What was the episode (either entire or in part) that made you love the show?

Oh, boy. This is a hard one to answer. Probably either “All Shook Up” (because I loved seeing Superman save the world) or “Tempus, Anyone?” (because . . . well, AltClark is one of my favorite characters, and I love the concept of alternate universes!).

How long have you been writing?

Since I was eight, I think! I remember writing my first full-length story in Word Perfect. It was about a girl and her pony. 😉

How long have you been writing Lois & Clark?

Hmmm . . . I think probably late high school/early college was when I started writing L&C. But until just last year, I hadn’t worked up the courage to share any of my writing.

What types of fanfics have you written?

Most of my longer fics are AUs. For whatever reason, I’m fascinated with the “what if . . . ?” of alternate beginnings for Clark and exploring how things would be different for him and the other characters in different contexts. For my shorter fics, I do love to write stories about emerging superpowers!

Favorite story you have written? Why?

My Destined series is my favorite (and Savior a close second). I think Destined is my favorite because it has a little bit of everything (well, and a whole lotta waffs!). I got to do some worldbuilding in part 1 that was soooo fun, and then there’s . . . emerging superpowers, a bit of angst and hurt/comfort, lots of happy and in love, and so many little scenes that I just had so much fun writing . . . . It’s also the longest story I’ve ever written (the three parts come to about 278,000 words!), and I just LIVED the story for months while writing. I loved the characters I developed (guess what, it’s another AU! Haha), and I think it’s a wonderful story that I love to reread all the time.

Current project/projects:

Hmm, where to start! I currently am working on a co-authored fic with KSaraSara, titled Rewrite the Stars (guess what, it’s an AU!). And I have multiple WIPs in different stages of writing. One is another AU in which Clark doesn’t end up with the Kents until he’s ten years old. Another story I’ve got going is a sequel to my series Anchor. I’ve also got a fic, tentatively titled Tarnished, in which Lex Luthor steals Superman’s body early in Season 1, just to take a romp around Metropolis and cause as much death and destruction as possible (eep!).

I’ve also got two original stories I’m writing. The first is a contemporary romance, and the second is YA sci-fi.

Personal picks of other fanfics you have read:

Oh this one is difficult too, although mostly because I’m really terrible at remembering titles and author names (and also because there are so many!). Here’s just a few . . .

Ack, there’s sooooo many more, and I can’t think of them (especially all the older fics that I read and loved, but I just can’t remember the titles and authors)! This fandom is super talented, with so many wonderful fics!

General Interview Questions

What attracted you to writing fanfic and what about it do you enjoy?

I think what attracted me to writing fanfic was my love of the characters (or, you know, my obsession with them!). I started reading fanfic before I started writing it, and then I started dreaming up my own stories . . . and there you go!

What is it about L&C universe/characters that you enjoy exploring the most?

Mostly what I enjoy is exploring AUs and finding new ways for Clark/Superman to get into (and then out of!) trouble (eep!). I do like trying to find new ways for Superman to use his powers and pushing some of the limits the show seemed to put on him (that maybe the comics do not).

What do you think makes the best story?

Hmmm, great question! A little bit of everything is best! I LOVE a good Superman rescue, and you can probably tell, I’m a sucker for AUs and angst and throwing all the things at Clark/Superman that he can handle, then figuring out how he gets out of it. And of course, gotta have the relationship/romance in there as well.
