Showcase: Toomi

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the Lois & Clark: The New Adventure of Superman Writer’s Showcase, pioneered by Annie Lansbury back in 1998! In the last few years, FoLCdom has seen a resurgence—old FoLCs coming back, new FoLCs joining, long-time lurkers de-lurking. It’s heartening to know just how awesome and long lasting FoLCdom is!

Earlier this year, Carrie Rene started a monthly newsletter (which gets posted on the L&C Fanfic Message Boards and in the Discord server—yes! We have a #loisclark Discord server!), and with that, she’s brought back the writer’s showcase!

Now, in keeping with Annie’s famous words, without further ado, we are proud and honored to present this week’s Writer in the Writer’s Showcase …

Lois & Clark or Superman Status

How long have you watched Lois & Clark?

I caught the second season when I moved to Canada in ’94. I don’t know if it aired in the UK in ’93 and if it did, I didn’t see it. I think it was part of the Thursday night line up? I’d go to a friends house and we’d do homework and watch our shows.

What was the episode (either entire or in part) that made you love the show?

I don’t remember much from the first run through, other than not seeing most of season 4 (it was a different night by then). I do remember watching the wedding though.

Years Decades later I rented the DVD’s from the library right as the world shut down and ended up with seasons 1-3 for a few months longer than the original rental thanks to the library being closed. It was the moment where Superman rescues Lois from the bank vault (despite its inaccuracies) in ‘I’m Looking Through You’ that caught my attention. The Phoenix is possibly my favourite episode but there are many episodes that led me in search of fanfic.

How long have you been writing?

I started writing fanfic in 2006 for a different fandom. I wrote for a few years before wandering away from that fandom.

How long have you been writing Lois & Clark?

I think officially I posted the first fic in February 2021, but I was already writing Aftershocks (which started being posted in May 2021) in a notebook during slow times at work in fall 2020.

What types of fanfics have you written?

I seem to like HoL fics? I do enjoy episode tags and other one shot shorties (which have a horrible tendency to morph into multichapter fics that never get finished).

Favorite story you have written? Why?

Since I’ve written it, ‘Aftershocks’ was my favourite, but that might be usurped by ‘Could’a, Would’a, Should’a.’

Why? There’s so much left for fanfic writers in HoL and I keep wanting to do something with them. Aftershocks was supposed to be an episode fix-it but morphed, and will have a sequel at some point. Could’a, Would’a, Should’a is another episode fix-it that can stay as it is and hopefully fill a few of the plot holes we were left with. There may be a one-shot tag at some point as one kind reviewer left me with a plot bunny…

Current project/projects:

The Christmas fic….

Under The Dancing Lights – which has been lounging on the hard drive for far too long. Hopefully to be finished in 2024.

They Called Him Superman – an AU fic.

There’s a few others that don’t have titles, or the title will give the story away. I’m hoping to get a few finished this coming year, including the follow up to ‘Letting Go.’

Personal Picks of other Fanfics you have read:

The Next Step and Honeymoon in Vegas by Sue S

Revisionist History by Kathy Brown

Wherever You Will Go by KSaraSara

Delusions of Grandeur by folc4evernaday

General Interview Questions

What attracted you to writing fanfic and what about it do you enjoy?

All those years ago it was reading what others were coming up with. My very first fanfic was a friendship fic, with hints of angst (which was true to that particular tv show), and it was a story in my head that I wanted to tell. Surprisingly, people liked it. I enjoy the community aspect of writing fanfiction. You have the freedom to tell a story, much like a reader has the freedom to read, or not read, and comment or not (though I will say comments are the best gift you can give a writer). I’ve appreciated looking back at some of my earlier works and realizing how much my writing has grown, despite the rampant commas still.

What is it about L&C universe/characters that you enjoy exploring the most?

You can put them anywhere, in any situation, and make it work. Opportunities are endless.

What do you think makes the best story?

That’s hard to say…. Any story that captures my imagination and I can picture the story and hear the characters voices as I read it.
